Double-hung windows are the most popular type of windows in the U.S. They have a traditional yet flexible appearance that allows them to easily match with various home styles. Double-hung windows offer a number of advantages; we discuss three of the most important ones in this three-part blog.
Double-Hung Windows and Ventilation
One of the greatest benefits to having double-hung windows is excellent ventilation and air flow control. This is made possible by the window type’s design and mode of operation. Double-hung windows can be opened from either the top or the bottom. or you can move both the upper and lower sashes at the same time if you want.
If you need just a little ventilation, open just one sash. Doing so will let warm air out and cool air in, or vice versa. Meanwhile, for maximum ventilation, you can open both the top and bottom sashes. In this manner, warm air will be released through the top window, while cool air can be brought in through the lower window.
The Importance of Adequate Ventilation
In case you are wondering why ventilation is so important, let’s take a look at how heat enters your home and how ventilation works.
Radiant heat is transferred through the roof and the walls. Glass windows let in certain wavelengths of light. Meanwhile, hot air simply enters through windows, doors, cracks, and gaps. Once heat enters the home, it slowly dissipates, as there is often no way for it to escape. This will make the indoors warmer the entire day, even during evenings, when temperatures are supposed to be lower. The heat can last indoors even for several days.
Ventilation is particularly important in cooling your home. Good ventilation supplies your home with fresh air, and dilutes or removes stale, warm air. Opening your double-hung windows allows stale air out, and fresh air into your home.
By ensuring proper ventilation, you can prevent and eliminate foul odors, remove dangerous pollutants and gases, and stop health problems such as allergies and respiratory conditions. Furthermore, good ventilation also keeps your home protected from moisture damage while making it energy-efficient.
